A Good Day by Priscilla Ahn

by Tim on August 7, 2009

Just like in the movies, talented people can journey to Los Angeles and still make their dreams a reality. That’s how singer-songwriter Priscilla Ahn launched her career. She packed her stuff and left Pennsylvania for L.A. Fortunately, she found steady work, a supportive circle of fellow artists and a record deal. Signed to jazz label Blue Note, Priscilla’s music is more closely related to label-mate Norah Jones.

A Good Day

The album starts off with her hit single Dream and carries you through waves of soft, passionate songs. The first time I was listening to the album I kept thinking of movie scenes the songs could have been the soundtrack for. I didn’t find out till the other day that one of her older songs Rain was used on the hospital drama show Grey’s Anatomy and the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy featured Dream. So, apparently I wasn’t alone in thinking her songs were awesome for soundtracks!

The album is emotional, in a pleasant way. Her voice sounds young and crisp but has the authority of a more mature vocalist. Accompanying Priscilla’s amazingly pure voice is a collection of fun instruments including the ukulele, Wurlitzer, and a glockenspiel.

One thing that surprised me about the album is that even though I don’t usually listen to slow music, I didn’t lose interest or get sleepy. Actually, quite the opposite. I was interested in the lyrics and the strength of Ahn’s voice really drew me in.

One of my favorite songs is I Don’t Think So, a short song about a relationship that isn’t working. My other favorite is Red Cape, a cheerful sounding song despite the lyrics.

I’m alive should’ve died in a plane crash
Four long years ago
Lost my hope, couldn’t cope with my fear of
News on the radio
But I’ve got a long, red cape
